As with anything in life, there are times when tea is appropriate to drink, and there are times when it is not. For special varieties of tea, such as Oolong, the general drinking guidelines are even more definitive, because of the meaning behind the tea. It wouldn't make sense, for example, to ask for a cup of Oolong tea on a Friday night at a bar or nightclub. Nor would it make any sense to serve Oolong tea as the main beverage for a 16 year olds birthday party.

Appropriate Circumstances For Oolong Tea.

A family reunion or gathering:

Tea is a wonderful beverage to serve on an occasion where people may be around for many hours at a time. Assuming that you are not having a wild party with your relatives, tea can act as conversational drink, as it somewhat allows for a conversation to run its course uninterrupted. Yes, this is a fairly deep analysis - but it is actually a proven reason why family reunions or gatherings often see an abundance of tea being served.

Showing respect to elders:

As is customary within the Chinese culture, young people look up to their older, wiser elders, and are able to show this by offering them a cup of tea. This usually happens when a younger person meets an elder at their home or at a restaurant, and is generally accepted in Chinese society as a polite and considerate thing to do.

As an apologetic sign:

If you are attempting to make a sincere apology for actions or words, discussing the matter over a cup of tea is a great way to go about it. Perhaps this is because Oolong tea is looked at as being a calming tea - hence its role in getting things back on track. 

 

As a history lesson:

Whilst this may seem humorous, the Chinese culture is very rich in history - as is the Oolong tea itself. Therefore, there is no better way to pass on ones knowledge than by combining the two historic elements in to one lesson.
